Who is B.R.A.S.S.?
BRASS (Bend-Redmond Asperger's Syndrome
Support) was started in the Central Oregon area in
1999 by three mothers who felt the need to meet with
others who were familiar with Aspeger Syndrome. Its
name is from two home towns (Bend and Redmond,
Oregon) of these three founders.
BRASS
is designed to aid individuals and family members of
those with Asperger's Syndrome. Asperger's Syndrome
(A.S.) is also known as a Pervasive Development
Disorder, (P.D.D.), and has also been called
the lighter side of Autism. In other words, it is a
developmental or birth condition that affects
everything that the person does, says, or thinks
throughout his or her lifetime. It cannot be solved by
surgery or medication. This site is established to
help individuals and families in Central Oregon (USA)
learn about A.S. The characteristics of A.S. as
identified by Uta Frith, a well known Psychologist from
England include:
 |
a peculiar pattern
of intellectual abilities |
 |
impaired
communication |
 |
impaired
make-believe play |
 |
impaired social
relationships |
 |
the repetitive
phenomena of rituals. |
Asperger syndrome (A.S.) manifests
itself in different manners, depending on the age,
sex, experiences and personality of the
individual. Even though A.S. is a poorly known
condition, its occurrence has been increasing in
epidemic proportions. There are many various
discussion issues that arise for those with Asperger's
Syndrome including, but not limited to:
 |
Anger Management |
 |
Behavior Issues |
 |
Co-morbid
conditions |
 |

This web-site includes a
compilation of many articles and essays written by
many different individuals. Some are well
known professionals, others write personal accounts,
and there are also the media sensationalism articles.
We encourage you to read and learn from all these
sources--giving them credit for their strengths and
being aware of their possible weaknesses.
Realize there are many conflicting views about A.S. We
have tried to present both sides of each story, and
have not tried to take sides. We do not
recommend or endorse anything, but realize that each
case is totally different and unique. You must apply
what is appropriate in each case, and that can change
from person to person, family to family and from time
to time. Only experience will show you what is
appropriate in your own case. You may try,
and fail, with many suggestions before you find "a
key" to help in your situation.
BRASS
used to meet on a regular monthly basis, but now
meetings will only be held as desired. Notification
will be through this web-site. If you are interested
in planning a meeting, please contact our web-master,
Linda Newland,
directly. If you wish to "chat" about A.S., we
recommend you join
ASPIRES (a list also run by Linda
Newland, aimed for parents, partners, spouses and
those "with" A.S, world-wide), or one of the other
multiple chat groups or message boards you can find on
the Internet.
Thank you for visiting
BRASS. We hope
this site will assist you in understanding A.S.,
spreading knowledge, and making a positive difference
for your loved one's with A.S., your family and in "your"
community.
